Our mission: Sustainable coatings for a sustainable future ―
At AkzoNobel, we consistently aim to be the most sustainable color manufacturers. It is our conviction to dedicate our ambition and our imagination to the best possible use of available natural resources. For this, we have adopted a strategy focusing on the radical efficiency of our raw materials and our energy consumption.
Our future depends on our ability to produce more, consuming less; for this reason we collaborate closely with our customers and our providers to develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry, including the reduction of VOC emissions, increased resilience to weathering, protection and security.
Our efforts towards the sustainable management of our products have been acknowledged with the European Responsible Care Award by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and the Award for Responsible Care by the International Association of Chemical Manufacturers (AICM). We perpetually keep the 1st place in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index during the last years, among 350 other companies in the materials category.
Interpon D powder coatings have significant environmental advantages, that lever their rapid proliferation. Consistently, they are preferred over liquid paints at the specification stage of architectural projects, when choices about green building performance are most important.
Interpon D powder coating advantages are related to the absence of solvents and to mimal waste consumption at the trade coating facility, resulting in zero wastage: There is no need for solvent transportation to the coating line or to the trade coating facility, no after-burning, no VOC emissions, more than 95% usage of the solid paint.
Ever more trade coating plants conform to the legislation that requires the reduction of solvent use, replacing their liquid coating lines with electrostatic powder coating ones. Furthermore, cleaning the powder coating equipment is relatively easy, with very little waste. While liquid paint requires 2-4 application layers, powder coatings only need one and the required energy is significantly lower.
Since 2015, we consolidated the life cycle of Interpon D architectural powder coatings, providing their type III EPD environmental declaration with ISO 14025. The full EPD qualification documentation, as well as the Climate Declaration for Interpon D are available at www.environdec.com.
EPD Environmental Product Declaration is a certified, internationally recognized listed declaration providing transparent, quantified, comparable data on the life cycle and the environmental impact of a product. The main goal of any such product declaration is to provide reliable, comparable, certifiable information on the environmental output of goods and / or services, covering their entire life cycle.
LEED, Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification program by the US Green Building Council, acknowledging the most environmentally friendly construction practices. To obtain a LEED certification, buildings should fulfil specific requirements and be awarded points corresponding to different levels of certification. The total evaluation is based on the added points towards sustainability. Because of their EPD certification, Interpon D powders provide LEED points added to each Interpon D series.
