Greek Architecture Awards 2021 ―
Monday, July 5th saw the successful conclusion of the 2021 Greek Architecture Awards ceremony, organized by DOMa Editions. AkzoNobel was a sponsor at the event, with Color /n Architecture supporting DOMa Editions in their consistent effort to promote and showcase contemporary Greek architecture. Color /n Architecture was there for the additional reason that many of the awarded entries had entrusted AkzoNobel with their colors, which made a significant contribution to the overall success of the architectural result.
This year’s event, held at the atrium of the Benaki Museum in Athens, was exceptional in the sense that it took place with the guests being physically present, after almost two years of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year saw 204 submissions in total, more than any other year. Out of 162 teams, 42 finalists made it to the next stage.
The Jury consisted of: Roger Diener, “Diener & Diener”, Βasel, Professor at ETH Zurich (Switzerland); Juan Herreros, “Estudio Herreros”, Professor and Dean at the ETSA Μadrid (Spain) and Vittorio Pizzigoni, “Baukuh”, Milan, Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Genoa (Italy).
Constantine Dekavallas presented the Award for “Best First Project by a Young Architect”; Bouki Babalou for “Best Unbuilt Project”; Kyriacos Kyriakides for “Best New Architecture at an Existing Building” and Ioannis Vikelas for “Best Built Project”. The former prizes were complemented by Peer Awards for best built project and best unbuilt project; the judges were the architects who participated in the event.
The exhibition stand of AkzoNobel, right beside the event stage, reminded all the guest architects of the tools we have developed to facilitate their choice of suitable powder coatings for their work. The center of the exhibition stand was dominated by our three-dimensional color swatch by Semiotik Design Agency, POP Color Box, featuring twenty curated superdurable Interpon powder coating colors. By the same designer, the award-winning Color Book Interpon D2525 featured 120 powder coating colors, in the first comprehensive physical architectural specification guide for metal structures targeted to the Greek market. In-between, we chose to include memorabilia from the architectural competition launched by AkzoNobel for upgrading the facades in Greek cities; the competition prize was designed by CTRLZAK. The banner in the background announced the launch of a new communication policy between AkzoNobel and architects who choose to specify Interpon powder coatings in the metal components of their projects: the signature light blue frame marked with “Architecture”, standing out in the middle of the banner, signifies the new visual identity for all architectural powder coatings by our company.
The award-winning projects were announced in a live online broadcast, and the day of the event saw the launch of the “Greek Architecture Awards 2021” volume, including all the finalists.
